The first ingredient in the list is yeast. Yeast is a type of fungi. It is needed for the production of alcohol and carbon dioxide through fermentation of simple sugars. The process of fermentation also produces substances which improve flavor and the aroma of this beer.

Yeats is available in two types namely larger and ale yeast. Ale yeast is very active in the fermentation process, and hence it is called top fermenting. On the other hand, larger yeast in which is less active in fermentation is called bottom fermenting. These two type of yeast work differently under different temperature conditions. Ale yeast ferments best at higher temperatures whereas larger yeast at much colder temperatures.

Alcohol is produced in a natural way from sugar in the process of fermentation. The sugar that is fermented is normally from malts. Malt is any grain used in brewing. Often, barley is used since it produces a lot of sugars. However, other types of grains can also be used. The malts are broken down through a process called malting to increase the surface area for the action of yeast.

Malting takes place in two stages. The first phase involves germination of the grains. In this process, the grains are steeped in water. After two days, the germination begins, and the enzymes required for malting are produced. The next step involves drying of germinated malt. The malt is dried in the kiln. The temperature of the kiln and the way in which this drying is done influence the type and color of the beer produced.

Hops are very imperative in this process. These are flowerlike cones of a climbing vine, and their key role is to add bitterness to the beer. In the heart of a hop, a cone is a little gland which contains oils and resins. Apart from adding bitterness to this product, they also enhance the smell and taste.

The time taken to boil the hops dictates the level of degree of bitterness. The longer the boiling, the stronger the bitterness. There are several types of hops. And each type has specific characteristics. This, therefore, means that each variety adds something unique to the beer. It has been found that the variety of hop used in brewing influence the demand and thus the cost of this brew.

Water is the key ingredient as it provides the medium for mixing all the three named ingredients. The Brewers need to know the techniques in which water should be mixed to produce the best brew. In general, the water used must be safe for drinking and of good quality.
