The Main Home Brew Ingredients

By Kimberly Hayes

Home brewing is one thing that almost all lovers of this drink have at once tried or imagined. This is because they usually feel the need of having it much closer to them. It may seem like an impossible idea to some but in reality making of the making of the drink at home is comfortable with all precautions and home brew ingredients at hand.

Any drink known is made out of specific or individual ingredients. The same applies to the coming up with this drink. One advantage off this drink is that the parts making it up are all natural making it healthy if not exceeded. Every material used serves a particular function no matter how little it is. The actual fermentation and mixing are done in the simplest means since the apparatus at home are simple.

For you to make your beer making a reality, you need to have malt, hops, yeast and not forgetting water. Brewing salts and additives are used but mainly for industrial needs. Malt is the first item that needs to be considered. Since brewing involves fermentation, a process that cannot happen without the presence of sugar, malt is going to be the sugar source.

This malt can be sourced from different kinds of grains ranging from rice, corns, oats and even barley. The preferred grain is the barley. Unlike the other many kinds of grains, barley has the highest content of sugar. Therefore, for high-quality beer barley has always been the solution. It is advisable that if one buys barley in bulk, they should store them in cool and dry places for durability.

From the malt or any grain that one will be comfortable with we obtain the malt extract. This malt is usually a solution made of sugar from the grain. The method of obtaining the solution is known as direct extraction unlike in the past where people used to grind and smash the grain. The extract is then broken down to give alcohol.

Apart from the malt, water is another ingredient that is very vital. It comprises the highest content percentage of the beer. One is allowed the water they normally used for drinking back at home. The water used will influence how the beer will taste.High chemical content in the water also affects the fermentation process.

In addition to these two, we have yeast. It is the catalyst of the entire process. Whereas the malt gives the sugar, the yeast has the role of breaking down the sugar to give the alcohol. This whole procedure is what is referred to as fermentation. Temperature levels will force one to either use the Ale yeast that works in temperature above 600F or the Lager yeast for temperatures lower than 400F.

To ensure that the beer will have a pleasing taste and attractive smell to the consumers, hops are used. They are also able to control the bitterness that may come up with fermenting products. One can use a type of hop depending on the need they want it to handle. Before brewers discovered hops, flowers and special herbs used to be used instead.
