By Martha Ellis

For decades now, people have been preparing beer locally. The importance of this beer is that it does not contain the harmful chemicals which are used to manufacture the commercial ones. Here you regulate the contents of your brew. In this article, we discuss the major home brew ingredients for beer.

The common components are the malted grains. They can also be called malts. Different types of cereals can be used in the preparation of beer. However, barley is commonly used because it has a lot of sugar content. Besides, its natural hulls make working with it easy.

Other grains which can be used to make beer are wheat, oats, rice and corn. These grains are not used independently; usually, they really are added to introduce a particular flavor and character. A larger percentage grain, however, remain barley which is produced and appreciated widely.

When making malts, the grains are allowed to sprout partially. They are then heated up inside a kiln or oven to stop the germination process. This is done to remove starches from them. The carbohydrates are converted into sugar. During the process of fermentation, yeast feed on the sugar.

Water forms a larger percentage of beer. Any water can be utilized provided it is safe for drinking. However, the mineral content in the water may affect the quality of the beer. Experienced brewers say that beer made from hard water and soft water taste differently. All the same, the mineral content of water is not a major concern.

Hops are favorite flowers which most people like to use. Their green buds give a counterbalance of bitterness and sweetness of the beer. Besides, they give the beer interesting flavors and aromas. Their significant contribution is that they enable the beer to remain fresh for a long time. Apart from hops, other ingredients which can be used include; spices and herbs.

There are two things which make hops useful for beer brewing. These are oils and the resin. The resins are responsible for the bitterness. Different varieties of hops have varying amounts of resin thus the different level of bitterness. The hop oils provide the delicate and nuanced flavors and aromas in the drink.

What makes beer becomes beer is yeast. They are bacteria which feed on the sugar produces by the malted grains and release carbon dioxide in the process. They also consume other consumable compounds after which they hibernate. At this stage, the liquor is ripe enough to be enjoyed.

Two types of yeast exist. They are the ale yeast and lager yeast. Ale type can be used at different places with varying temperatures. For this reason, it is suitable to be used at home by then local brewers. Lager type, on the other hand, works only at specific temperatures; cool temperatures.

Yeast is available as liquid yeast or dry yeast. The dry ones are usually in foil pouches and resemble the powdered yeast used for bread baking. An unopened packet of these dry yeast can last for many months when kept in a drawer or even years when kept in a refrigerator. Liquid yeast has poor keeping quality thus goes bad very quickly even when kept in a refrigerator.
