Why Opting For Organic Beef And Pork Is Far And Away The Best Idea

By Scott Wood

There always seems to be a new study out about the merits of eating or avoiding meat in the diet. Most dietitians agree that, if you are going to eat meat, chicken, fish, and seafood are the best choices. There are plenty of Americans that have no intention of giving up ham, chops, steak and hamburgers however. If that describes you, there are good reasons why you need to seriously consider organic beef and pork over the grain fed alternatives.

If you think the grain fed meat you are eating contains nothing but meat, you need to do a little research before you grill your next hamburger. The FDA regulations allow producers to add all kinds of things to it. This includes a solution of salt, sodium phosphate, and water to increase animal weight. This tenderizes the final product and gives its a longer shelf life.

The FDA lets producers inject livestock with hydrolyzed proteins in order to make the meat more tender as well. There is MSG in these proteins, but you will not be able to tell by reading the labels. Producers are not required to add that piece of information on the packaging.

Almost all grain fed livestock is raised in huge storage facilities called concentrated animal feeding operations. They crowd as many animals as possible into these places and then inject them with antibiotics every day regardless of their health. They have to do this in order to prevent disease from wiping out the whole herd. Grass fed livestock are healthier and have strong immune systems. If an animal gets sick, it is removed from the population.

The FDA has approved three synthetic and three natural hormones for use in the production of beef and pork. Unless you are eating organics, you are ingesting at least one of these hormones every time you eat meat. There are serious concerns that these kinds of hormones can cause reproductive problems in people. A lot of scientists firmly believe the use of the hormones should be stopped until more research is done. Meat from grain fed livestock will not contain hormones.

One of the advantages of eating organic meat is the high content of conjugated linoleic acid, CLA. Pasture raised animals have about twice as much of this acid as those raised on grain and corn. CLA is an antioxidant. It helps prevent cancers. Omega 3 levels are significantly higher in organic meat. Omega 3s protect your heart and help prevent cancer.

Omega 6 is believed to increase the risk of heart attacks, arthritis, stroke, osteoporosis, and depression. Grain fed livestock have elevated levels of Omega 6 because the diet creates an acidic ph solution that combines with the starches in the corn and other grains. All of this is passed on to the individual eating the meat.

It's hard to argue that the additives, hormones, and antibiotics injected into livestock won't affect the people who eat the meat that comes from them. Cooking the meat to a certain temperature may or may not reduce the risks. Producers will continue to market these products as long as there is a demand for them. Consumers can choose the healthy alternative in response.
