Using Home Brewing Supplies To Make Your Own Beer

By John Edwards

Despite the fact that you can buy almost anything at a convenience store these days, some people still prefer to make their own products at home. This might include jams and preserves, pastries and even alcohol. There are different home brewing supplies currently available in the market. This can allow you to start making your own beer, from the comfort of your home.

The various equipment found in starter kits can be divided into three categories. You can buy a department store kit, which has a fermenting vessel, bottles, caps and basic ingredients. Small batch store brewer kits are another category. These allow you to make up to seven liters of beer. The last category is the classic home brewer kits. These are a bit more expensive than the other ones, but they can make more alcohol and are generally used by experts.

The type of beer whether whole grain, stout or lager, will also need to be considered when you are selecting your ingredients. The quantity of liquor you want to produce may also affect the specifications and sizes of the equipment you will require.

Cleanliness and good sanitation is another factor you need to think about. In most cases people will assume that store bought materials are clean, or only need rinsing. This is not exactly true. You will be needed to clean the items using dish cleaner. This should not be scented, as the scent may affect the final taste or aroma of the beer. You will also need to sanitize the things that will be used for fermentation, as any unwanted microorganisms could affect the outcome.

The ingredients used also affect the outcome. You will need to buy malt, fermenting sugar, yeast, and hops. All these ingredients will be used at different stages. Beer is generally made of water and this should be clean freshly boiled.

The whole process is long and may take over a month to complete. It involves boiling the malt, adding the hops, then letting this mixture cool. You can then add the yeast. Due to the specific nature of yeast, it needs to be added at a particular temperature, in order for it to ferment the mixture. After this, you should store the wort in a place that is easy to clean and has a steady temperature.

This mixture is left for about three weeks in a cool, dark environment. The fermenting vessel can be changed at least once to allow for the settling of sediments. After this sugar is added to the mixture and it is bottled and capped. It will then be left to allow for carbonation. At this point, you can put it in the fridge and after a while, pour yourself a glass.

You can make different tasting beers by using different yeasts, or different varieties of hops. Depending on the state you live in, you can even start selling your beer once you get some approval from the relevant departments. You should regularly inspect the distilling equipment to ensure that it is clean and the area has no signs of vermin. This could lead to contamination of the final product.
