Few types of cuisine have inspired such a grand following, generating variations and imitations far beyond the scope of its home country. Italian cooking is one such example. This popular fare has spread like wildfire out of its provenance and into the turf of appreciative locales all over the world. Like all comestibles, the types and styles of food in Italy are many and varied. However, because of the several ill advised imitations cropping up in the world all over, misconceptions are rife. The most popular types back in the country of provenance are the Neapolitan and the Roman. The marked distinction is that the first has a fluffy, thick crust. The second has a relatively thin one.

One of the oldest pasta recipes is the Lasagna, Bolognese style. This traditional comfort food is made with a combination of pasta sheets, meaty sauce, and cheese. The Roman Spaghetti a la Carbonaras recipe is a composite of fresh eggs, pork jowl, Pecorino cheese, and black pepper. The Burrata, on the other hand, is made from cow or buffalo milk, plus mozzarella cheese and fresh cream.

There is the rice dish Risotto alla Milanese which is often served together with Ossobuco alla Milanese, which is a type of bone in veal shank. The Fiorentina Steak is a T bone cut from a Chianina cow, cooked on the outside and rare on the inside. Panzanella and Focaccia are all types of delicious bread. The first is bread salad and the second is flatbread baked on a hearth. A Caponata is an eggplant dish or salad, and the cicchetti is a composite of creamed cod and artichoke hearts, taken with a glass of wine.

For the desserts, theres the classic gelato, which is made by artisans, boasting of less butterfat and air and more natural flavors. There is also tiramisu, which is made from the highest quality coffee and mascarpone, which can be added with cream and egg whites. Of course, any list will not be complete with Italian style coffee, or espresso. Then caffe macchiato, ristretto, cappuccino, and many others worth mentioning. Your dining experience will also not be complete without a healthful glass of wine. Did we mention that Italy is the largest exporter and consumer of wine in the world.

It is very telling and worthy of note that in this hyper globalized world, you can find a bit of every culture even in places where you dont expect them to be. You dont have to be in Italy or an Italian to enjoy its exemplary cuisine. As the proverb goes, in Rome, do as the Romans do.
