Why Muslims Insist Upon Halal Certified Meals

By Brian King

Every detail of the day to day lives of Muslims is regulated by the Islamic Law. This law has particularly strict instructions regarding what Muslims may eat and how their food must be prepared. Even the manufacturing and packaging of food is covered. This is important because food is not just nourishment for Muslims. It also has a profound impact on the spirit and moral character. This is why Muslims absolutely insist upon eating only Halal certified meals.

Halaal certification is handled by Halaal Councils. They do not grant certification easily and go to great lengths to make sure that applicants comply with all the requirements applicable to Halaal food. Certification is a lengthy process and certification is only granted for one year at a time. Infringements of any rule will certainly lead to the immediate cancellation of the Halaal certification.

There are certain types of food not allowed at all. Pork, in any form, is one of them. Alcohol is completely taboo, even if it is an ingredient in medication. Even derivatives and extracts used in cooking must be sourced from approved Muslim abattoirs where there are always Muslim inspectors present. The entire slaughtering process is strictly controlled throughout and extremely high standards of hygiene are maintained

It is not only the ingredients used in preparing Halaal food that is controlled by Islamic Law. They way in which it is packaged and prepared are also subjected to strict rules. Utensils and tools that have been used for the reparation of non Halaal food may never be used. Containers and utensils used for Halaal food must even be cleaned and stored separately. No cross contamination of food or utensils is allowed.

It is not only Muslims that are allowed to apply for Halaal certification. Anyone that is equipped and prepared to follow the rules contained in the Islamic Law may apply. Applicants do not have to manufacture, package, prepare or sell only Halaal products either. They must have measures in place to prevent any form of cross contamination, however. Halaal councils prefer that applicants employ at least two Muslims to oversee the processes.

Many people will be surprised to learn that there are millions of people that are not of the Muslim faith that also prefer Halaal food. They are attracted by the fact that this food is prepared under such strictly controlled hygienic conditions and that the ingredients are always of the very best quality. They believe that Halaal food tastes better and that it is generally healthier than other food.

Any lucrative market will attract dishonest operators and Halaal food is no exception. Many manufacturers, food outlets and restaurants proclaim themselves as Halaal friendly, trying to create the impression that they are certified. It is best to check the official Halaal website to make sure that an outlet or restaurant has indeed been awarded certification. Packaging should also feature the official logo of the Halaal Council.

There can be no doubt that Halaal food is healthy, tasty and at all times handled in hygienic conditions. Sadly, this is not the case with all other types of food consumed by so many millions of people every day. Muslims certainly do not think that the rules governing their eating habits are restrictive.
