If you and I are anything alike, then you most definitely were raised cooking and eating meals made from a pot or skillet sprayed with teflon. Many of the pans we buy are make like this today. They are sprayed with non stick teflon to stop food from getting stuck to the pan. You have to be extremely cautious with these pans, and you should not use steel utensils on pans coated with teflon or these pans will scratch. I'm positive you completely have seen what I'm talking about.
However this hasn't been always how pans were. People before cooked in cast iron skillets. Teflon lining didn't exist at that time, and men and women had to have something tough that would be around for quite awhile. Families needed something that was created once, and used for everything. And cast iron was the preferred pan of choice.
Cast iron pans happened to be very strong and could withstand nearly everything, from extreme heat to intense cold, or even being dropped on the pavement. People used these types of pans before modern technology. Cast iron pans often endured 45 years and were gifted down from your grandparents.
But at a certain point along the way, a lot of people lost this excitement for cast iron pans. A pan more time-saving came along and people forgot about pans made out of cast iron. Nowadays most people make use of inexpensive pans that are not made well, that can be easily washed. That's because cast iron takes a some extra work. Although if you put in that little bit of extra extra effort, the rewards are very worth it.
This doesn't mean that everyone has stopped cooking with cast iron pans all the way. I cook with cast iron pans quite often, and these types of pans are totally starting to stage a big revival. And that is because a lot of people have started to experience the value.
Allow me to explain a couple of the things that make cast iron cooking incredible:
Firstly, foods cooked in a pan made from cast iron taste delicious. This type of food can really taste a lot more delicious than the food that you serve in a normal pan made out of teflon. The reason is because of what is commonly referred to as the 'seasoning'. The pans 'seasoning' happens from never washing with soap to the surface of the pan, and preserving the tastes that are created from the food you cook. The pans flavors keep closed up in the pans porous surface, and after some time start to generate rich, hearty flavors in your food.
Secondly, pans that are made out of cast iron are already stick resistant if you care for the pans the right way. These pans do not need teflon or any other artificial material to stop food from sticking to the pan. That is if immediately following every use, you line the pan with a very fine coating of cooking grease. The oil assists to seal in the seasoning and establish a sweet surface that won't allow food to stick. Over time, this surface remains fixed.
Lastly, you can do any type of food with cast iron pans. You can prepare fresh vegetables on the stove top, cook steak, or even place these pans in the stove. These pans are super versatile. Most of the time I just leave my cast iron pan directly on top of the stove in order to use it anytime I want.
As I said before, using pans made from cast iron has quite a few positives. I didn't even mention all of them in this write up. Although if you might be pondering acquiring one of these pans, I completely would advise you to. It is a good addition and will completely improve your cooking. Also, the pans will last forever. I hope a ton more cooks will begin using pans made from cast iron like we did in the recent past.
