Family Recipe BBQ Sauce For Sale

By Angel Dudley

Everyone loves barbecued steaks, steaks, hamburgers or chicken on the grille. It can bring life to pork chops and is a must for slow cooking succulent ribs. Many people buy BBQ sauce for sale at local stores, and many others carefully mix secret family recipes and spread the secret sauce over meats, creating a truly one-of-a-kind barbecue experience.

For those that have ever been told they should bottle their secret recipe and sell it that may be closer to reality than first thought. Most states have guidelines in place for those that want to make food and sell it. There are also many great ways to market new sauces and foods at state festivals, fairs, flea markets and barbecue sauce competitions.

To start, request information from the state on what licenses, regulations and restriction for making and selling food products. A business license is generally required for all food products. Other requirements may exist for selling products out of state or over the Internet. Those launching this type of business should expect that product will be made at a separate location than home facilities. All ingredients are also normally stored at a separate location than home.

This doesn't always mean going into debt for heavy equipment. When just starting out its certainly possible to rent local kitchen space. Some churches will rent out kitchen space a few days a week to those eager to pursue making recipes, but don't have the money to purchase or rent a large building. This is usually enough to satisfy the state requirements.

When the business is making more of a profit the business can then rent its own building, and pay for ovens, and heavy cooking equipment. This will also secure the time needed to work on a business plan. Securing a loan may also be necessary.

It's also good to consider how the product will be bottled and labeled for sales. This should also comply with any state regulations. Think about if it will be offered in an individual bottle, or if it will be packaged as part of a barbecue kit? Once product is ready think about how to launch and market the new product.

Investigate ways to market locally and regionally. Some ideas might include contests and competitions, fairs, markets, or festivals. It might include renting space for barbecue demonstrations for a taste of the sauce on burgers or steaks. It might also include the Internet. No matter how the marketing campaign is launched remember that the objective is to increase selling and consumer potential.

One of the other ways to market product is by making an appointment with regional department store and grocery store managers who make decisions regarding merchandise and purchasing for stores. This may mean traveling to a regional office, or main grocery store in another city or state to talk to the purchasing manager. Do as much research as possible before the meeting. Know the region and the type of products the store or region carries. Remember competition is fierce for store space. The sales manager may want to know what makes this BBQ sauce for sale better than a similar product the stores is already carrying.
