What Items Are Added To Halal Rations

By Ida Dorsey

Halal food is that of poultry and meat that is slaughtered by butchers trained in the specifications of Islamic means of slaughtering. It also includes processed foods such as breads, treats and yogurts which are not allowed to include forbidden ingredients, meaning coloring and alcoholic components. In the past it was due to lack of knowledge and experience that producers were unable to deliver halal rations of high quality, but a lot has changed since then.

There are pre cooked meals that are being prepared for multiple uses. These are distributed at schools, refugee camps, shelters and in the army corps, and can be bought for camping and holiday purposes. Many Muslim followers make use of these meals when traveling by air. The packs that can be heated and immediately eaten can stay fresh for about twenty four months and others have expiry dates of up to five years.

A number of stores stock these ready meal packets with varieties that have all inclusive menus to chose from, which combine breakfasts, snacks, treats and main meal servings. Main meal servings usually entail a pasta dish that is also combined with vegetables and chicken as well as pasta sauces. Oats and fruit bars, nuts and dried fruits, chocolate bars, mints and jelly sweets are part of the packs. For drinks there are hot chocolate and fruit drink powder sachets. To top it up there are sugar packets, teabags, coffee sachets and chewing gum added.

Main meals are packaged separately in pouches that can be heated in microwaves or by placing them in boiled water. They can also be cut open to heat in pans over a fire or stove top. Good quality packages will include disposable teaspoons and other eating utensils as well as one or two napkins. Such a packet weights about three pounds in total.

The food parcels are prepared by keeping nutritional value of the meals in mind. They are also made with care and is generally cost effective. The amount of calories that should be consumed is taken into account. Items that are added balance out fat, sugar and fiber intakes. Main meals are not only pasta, but may include cooked rice, gravy, steaks and other beef slices, vegetables and gravy and Asian style noodles. High protein porridge are labeled as breakfast.

With the increased humanitarian and emergency responses around the world, suppliers also had to keep in mind the demand for halal friendly meal combos. Not only are foods required to last for prolonged periods, but also be protected from damage during transportation periods. These specified meals are well marked during production to ensure the recipients identify them as halal.

A number of producers have gone the extra mile and created combos that can feed a person for seven days. Not only has it eliminated waste by producing larger quantities rather than smaller, but these variations have come in particularly handy during the increased humanitarian initiatives and demands around the globe. These seven day combos were also produced in such a way that the lack of kitchen utensils, fires and stoves will not impact on the taste and edibility.

It is estimated that the current need for halal food rations is seventy percent. These packs will be clearly marked with stamps of certification and ingredients will be listed. Customers who buy these, people in need who receive these and soldiers who make use of these as meals are assured of its contents.
