Here Are Facts Regarding Horse Fence

By Jennifer Parker

Horses being herbivorous animals feed different parts of vegetation such as roots, leaves, and barks. When raised on a farm where crops are also planted, it is important to control their movement. That means that they have to be confined in specific locations on the farm. However, that is easier said than done because horses are very powerful animals. Installing a weak horse fence is a waste of time because they will be trampled or kicked.

Naturally, these animals have an instinct to jump, and that predisposes them to fence injuries than other animals. As such, it is important to make fences in a way that the animal cannot get injured trying to get over or through. This usually means that the spaces between posts or horizontal lines must be chosen carefully. Strength is one of the most important factors to consider too.

There several decisions that must be made when a person is designing a horse confinement. Certain areas are open for bargain prior to arrival at final decisions. At the same time there are areas of no bargain or compromise regardless of the choices one must make. Areas of no bargain include type of fencing. There is no way a person can use materials that endanger the lives of the horses in erecting fences. Dangerous materials include barbed wire and large square meshes.

Barbed wires easily entrap horses as they try to jump over or run through fences. This is why they are not acceptable for use on this job. The spikes on the barbed wire can cause a lot of injury to the animal to a point of causing death or career-ending damage. If one settles for square mesh, the holes of the mesh should be less than 3 square inches. Squares that are too large usually have the hooves of the horses trapped and may cause injury.

One has to put several factors into consideration when erecting a fence. The size of horses, budget, number, terrain, and maintenance costs and requirements are among the factors to be considered. A fence of 5feet to 4.5 feet is recommended. This ideal height ensures no incidents of escape or attempts.

The bottom part of the fencing must also be done well. The fencing material should be placed between 6 and 8 inches off the ground. This height is advisable because it is enough to prevent fowls from trying to escape the confinement. The height is also enough to prevent horses from trying to stick their heads under to graze.

Wood is the commonly used material in making horse fences just like before and currently. Proper treatment of wood used to erect horse fences is meant to ensure durability. There are many ways that such wood can be treated. When fencing a person must ensure that the treatment chemicals or technique applied on the wood does not poison the horses. All posts be driven to the required depths to ensure their strength.

With the invention of better technologies, wood is losing to newer construction materials. For instance, PVC is becoming the material of choice for many horse keepers. PVC is preferred because it is very beautiful and very durable under the right weather conditions. PVC is also cheaper and easier and less costly to maintain.
