How To Cook Fava Beans Properly

By Amy Richardson

Many people all around the world regularly include fava beans in their diet and they can be purchased in supermarkets and vegetable stores. Buying and preparing fresh food is always better than using canned foods and it can be cheaper. When you plan to use this type of food it is important that you know how to cook fava beans correctly.

Favas are very healthy and they are an excellent source of protein, fiber and vitamin B. There are tasty when they are eaten cold or hot and they can be used in salads and hot dishes such as stews. They can be purchased fresh in the pod so that you can peel and prepare them or you are able to buy a dried variety.

Preparing your produce and cooking it does not take too long and some basic cooking equipment is all you need. You will need a saucepan, some utensils and a colander as well as your cooker and some cold water. When the produce has been properly prepared it can be cooked or stored so that you can enjoy it at a later date.

If you have chosen to use dried favas you will have to first soak them overnight in a bowl of water to soften them. When the soak is complete every bean will have grown as it will absorb some water. You can then put the beans in a saucepan containing cold water before bringing to the boil and continue to cook for 3 to 4 minutes.

The next step is to turn off the heat and leave the beans to soak in the hot water for approximately one hour. You should then be able to peel each bean before you return them to a pan and simmer in water for around 45 minutes. When the beans are cooked you can then drain them in a colander at which point they will be ready to serve.

When you choose to prepare and cook fresh produce then some different techniques are needed. Pods will have to be opened and each been can be removed and added to a bowl containing ice cold water. You should then blanch the produce by adding it to a pan of boiling water for around thirty seconds. The beans can then be put back into the iced water to stop them from cooking and they can be peeled.

When you want to eat the freshly prepared produce you can steam it until it is cooked through and it can then be added to your chosen dish. Steaming food is a very healthy way to cook and all of the nutrients will remain. If you are not eating immediately you can store the produce in the fridge or freezer it and it can be used within six months.

You are able to get a lot of very useful information on how to cook foods by reading books and by browsing the internet. There are also a lot of food magazines that are regularly published and these contain some good recipes containing fava. The dried and fresh produce is extremely healthy and by adding it to your food intake you are helping to maintain a good diet.
