The Benefits Of Using Fava Flour In The Kitchen

By Mary Richardson

In today's health conscious world, many people are looking for ways to enhance their cooking with alternatives to traditional foods. The outlook for the types of foods we eat has changed because of our increase in technology and awareness of the makeup of different items. The decrease in physical activity over the last century has also caused many changes in our diets. Mixing or substituting fava flour for other items in recipes has many benefits.

The fava bean looks similar to the lima bean but is quite different. The flour is made from blanching the bean to remove the tough outer shell and grinding the dried bean. Originally, these beans were used by the ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago. They continue to be used all over the world.

Beans are an excellent protein source. Some have difficulty finding a good protein source and these provide a superior alternative. Iron and dietary fibers are also found in beans. People who have a hard time digesting meat or choose to enjoy the benefits of being a vegetarian are glad to use bean flours in their baking habits.

Increases in medical knowledge have exposed the fact that many people are unable to process gluten. Typical bases and flours are often gluten rich. The majority of people are capable of digesting gluten. However, many have discovered that stomach issues are developed from their inability to digest gluten. Now that they know, they turn to bean flours as a gluten free alternative since they can be substituted for regular flours.

This product can be mixed with or completely replace other items. Beans and their derivatives have been known as great additions to a healthy diet. The ground derivative is often used with other bean flours to completely replace the white or wheat version in order to create the completely gluten free experience. A quarter cup is often used as an enhancer.

Baked products like breads are not the only valid recipe for this alternative. The bean version can be used to replace traditional flours completely in most cases. It can be used as a beginner for gravies, dips, or to thicken soup. Cookies, cakes, breads, pizza, and even pancakes are great examples of uses.

Like any food product storage needs to be considered. Some groceries carry the product on a regular basis. In areas where it is not as well known a person may need to order the product in bulk. Regardless of the circumstances, storage needs to be considered. This particular food can be easily stored long term in a freezer to prevent spoilage.

Throughout time habits have been formed and broken. In the last couple of decades there has been an increase in obesity and as a result an increase in health concerns. Technology and increased medical knowledge has provided people with more information to make better choices. Due to more sedentary lifestyles and an increase in knowledge about the benefits of a wide variety of foods, society has become more aware of the benefits of bean based food items.
