Shelf Stable Meals Are The Best For Bug Out Bags

By Karyn Shields

People are not always prepared for emergencies, such as when the power goes out for extended periods of time or in time of natural disaster when they need to leave their homes. During this time, people still need to eat and they may not have a refrigerator or even a stove to make meals with. Shelf stable meals will help in this regard as they need nothing special to keep them ready to eat.

This bug out bag will need to contain a lot of stuff and, also, should not be too heavy. A bunch of cans is not the best things to place here, since people have to move as quickly as possible through many different types of terrain. The dehydrated foods, which are the epitome of shelf stable, are the better choice as they do not have the weight, yet still have all of the nutrition and taste that you need in your circumstances.

These lighter weight items can be placed in any bag and used as a way of feeding your party. Many companies make or prepare these meals and make them easy to eat and, actually, enjoy. Some have their own heat producing package and others are simply snacks with nutritious ingredients.

You may decide to prepare your own shelf stable foods by canning, storing or otherwise containerizing normal foods in preparation for the day you will need them. The basic categories are carbohydrates, fats and proteins, all of which are necessary for fairly balanced meals. These can be handled in ways that make them available whenever you need them.

Small, individual sized plastic containers of grains and beans, as well as honey and sugar will comprise the carbohydrates for your bag. This is a low cost food and stores easily and safely as long as it does not get any moisture and insects are kept out. These foods also contain some proteins and vitamin B which is needed by the body.

The body needs protein for repairing itself. It also is used for proper growth. Just because you are away from home does not mean you must ignore a proper diet. It does not store as easily because of the moisture in most proteins, such as meat and fish, however, canning this food stuff can make a meal down the road as easily as a protein bar and is healthier for you.

You can not ignore fats in your diet, either. This is not very easy to store but it is necessary for energy that will be needed if you are concerned about safety in your new circumstances. There are not only vitamins in fats that can not be obtained from other food, the taste of everything is improved because of it. Most fats will go rancid after a fairly short period of time, however, coconut oil will not do this. It can be stable for quite some time, resistant to rancidity even at room temperatures.

Since you know what is needed to make your bug out bag truly self sufficient, you are now in a better position to have meals for you and your family that actually will help you survive and, possibly, thrive. The stable food is all around you and you just need to be prepared to find it. Whether you buy it or process your own, you will be in a better position to survive the next natural or other disaster.
