By Steven Ross

Pizza is a kind of flatbread that is baked in an oven and topped with various substances including meats, condiments, and vegetables. The first usage of that term was in the tenth century in a Latin manuscript. The modern day pizza originated from Naples in Italy. Over time, it has become a global dish that is made and eaten in many different places in the world over. There are many experts in pizza in Cape May NJ that make the highest quality of the dish.

Modern pizzas evolved from similar flatbread dishes in Naples in Italy. They are suspected to have emerged in late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Before that time, ingredients such as basil, cheese, lard, salt, and garlic were used to top pizzas. The time of introduction of tomato as a topping is no quite clear. Many conflicting claims exist about this fact.

The meal can be prepared in many different ways. It is often prepared and served frozen, fresh, or as pieces. Problems encountered initially such as crusts that harden when heated and sauces mixing with dough have been overcome today. Better methods for preparation have been invented that allow the meal to be reheated without the crust hardening. Self-rising crusts are achievable and war ingredients are becoming more common.

Today, customers can buy raw pizzas and prepare them in their own ovens. The stores that sell such products assemble every aspect of the pizza so that the only thing left is cooking. One can also buy the ingredients from the stores and prepare the meal at home. This meal is a popular item on the fast food menu in many restaurants in developed countries.

Cooking is done through different methods and heat comes from various sources too. Some examples of oven used are wood-fired brick ovens, coal-fired brick ovens, electric deck ovens and conveyor belt ovens. Wood-fired and coal-fired brick ovens come at high costs and are luxurious, making them only affordable to expensive restaurants. Cooking of already prepared dough is done over the heat source.

When a deck oven is being used, paddles known as peels are used to slide pizzas into the equipment. Baking is done directly on hot bricks. Peels are sprinkled with cornmeal so that the dough slides with ease. Barbecue grills have also been used to bake the meal and in Chicago-style variants, pans are used for baking.

The crust, which is the bottom of the flatbread is made in different styles in different variants. In some variants, it is very thin while in others it is very thick. The crust is usually plain in most cases, but some restaurants season it with ingredients such as cheese, herbs, or garlic among other.

This meal is very healthy when prepared in the right way using the right ingredients. However, use of unhealthy ingredients by restaurant chains has made it to be criticized a lot in America. The meal is made unhealthy by the large amounts of food energy, fat, and salt that is added into it by restaurants.
