How To Obtain Certified EVOO

By Phyllis Schroeder

With so many brands to choose from, it can be a challenge to find the right olive oil for cooking. This is why a person needs to inform themselves on how to purchase certified EVOO so that they will not waste their money on something that is not real. Here are some tips to keep in mind when purchasing this type of product.

The date on a bottle of olive oil should be checked to see how long it will last. Some brands do not have dates on them which is a sign that they might not be genuine. Some might say that the date is not important, but one has to remember that olive is quite perishable and should be used up in a few months if one wants to maintain freshness.

If it is on a shelf for too long it could go rancid. In addition, one has to consider how the oil was bottled which can also affect how long the oil lasts. If the bottle is clear as opposed to dark, the light going through the clear bottle could shorten the shelf life of the oil. If it is stored in a place that is too hot this also affects the quality.

There is also the issue of pricing because some believe that the higher the price of the oil, the better it is. This is not necessarily true and one should be careful not mistake the price for the quality. There are a number of lower priced oils that are just as good or even better than the more expensive ones on the shelf.

There are many olive oils that are at the lower price range which are just as good as those listed at a higher price. It is usually these types of oils that used the most, which means that the expensive oils left on the shelves will not be as fresh. One can also check to see which brands are more popular than others even by well-known chefs.

One should also consider looking at research into the type of oils that are real and who is doing the research. There are many companies all over the world who are competing against each other, but not all of them produce genuine olive oil. When research is done, it is usually funded in part by a company that is trying to validate their business.

This does not mean that their oil is not legitimate, but it simply means that one should be aware of who is doing the testing and the research. If a consumer is knowledgeable about quality oils, they will know if the research is valid or not. It is also a good idea to stick with local brands or even local mills. This way, a person can know how olive oil is made and what to look for.

One should also consider the fact that just because olive oil was bottled in a country that is known for its olives, it does not mean that it is genuine. This is why tests are conducted to help consumers know which olive oil brands are the best. If a brand has been bought that one is not sure about, they can check with a reputable organization to know if they can trust the brand.
