Purchasing And Making A Live Lobster Meal

By Debra Schmidt

Restaurants that serve seafood are popular with many people today. As popular as they are, however, these places sometimes are expensive and beyond what people can afford. They also tend to get busy during the evening and weekends when people typically like to go out to eat. Instead of spending money at restaurants that may or may not have a table open, seafood fans instead may consider buying a live lobster and making their favorite meal at home. They can learn how to cook one of these crustaceans and also know how to buy a good one from their preferred market or grocery store by taking these tips into consideration.

Before anyone can prepare the entree, they must have the main ingredient. Lobsters are sold pretty much everywhere now, even in states where seafood is not harvested or produced locally. The fact that lobsters are sold everywhere, however, does not mean that every merchant is worthy of someone's business. People are advised to check out the crustacean tank for cleanliness, as well as the entire store for sanitation and safety standards. If the tank or the store looks dirty, people might shop elsewhere.

When looking at the lobsters in the tank, individuals might be told to avoid those that look like they are sick or look like they have been hurt. Injuries and illness could compromise the flavor and safety of the meat. If the tank itself is clean and the other lobsters look healthy, shoppers might choose another crustacean. If not, they could shop at another store.

Price may also come into play for individuals shopping for the meal. While the market typically sets the price that people pay, some stores add onto that base price in order to make a profit. It could benefit individuals to shop around and compare prices before buying.

Just as soon as people get home, they may put their lobsters in the refrigerator if they are not ready to start dinner. The crustaceans can stay in there for several hours. They go into a hibernation state while being refrigerated.

When people are ready to cook the meal, they may first put on a stock pot of hot water and bring it to a boil. They may season the water with salt and Bay seasoning if they prefer. After the water starts a rolling boil, it is time to put in the crustaceans. Individuals may remember to lower the creatures gently into the pot to avoid claws and tails from breaking. As they boil, the lobsters will turn a bright red hue. Cooking times vary; however, most chefs agree that each pound gets 12 to 15 minutes cooking time.

To finish off the meal and to make cooking easier, people can add items like potatoes and corn on the cob to the water about seven minutes into the boiling process. The rapid boil will cook the food and also provide suitable side dishes for dinner. They may also add crawdads or crab legs.

Using these strategies, people can cook a lobster that is live for dinner. The process tends to be quicker than people realize. They may also add some extras like corn and potatoes to round out the rest of the meal.
