Desserts Of Our States - Officially Recognized Treats!

By Marquerite Velasquez

Do you know that some states have special official food or dessert, just like how every state can have their official flag, animal and motto? Some of the sweet treats being referred here that are loved by individuals living in some of these states can be uncovered if you read on.

For instance, it probably wouldn't surprise you to learn that the State Pie of Florida is the Key lime pie. This tart, meringue-topped dessert is made using key limes, which are found throughout the famous Florida Keys. Floridians have been making this pie since the late 1800s, but was not officially named the state pie until 2006.

There are other states with official pies as well. Maine for instance has the blueberry pie as theirs because of the fact that their state fruit is blueberry. This particular state's official treat is known as the Whoopie Pie. With a record of 1,000 pounds in weight, the biggest Whoopie Pie was created in Maine. In Massachusetts on the other hand, the Boston Cream Pie which is actually layers of sponge cake separated by vanilla custard, topped with chocolate glaze, is their official state pie. Also, Massachusetts pride of a state cookie in the form of the chocolate chip cookie.

Sweet treats are truly enjoyed by some more states. The blueberry muffin was named as Minnesota's official state muffin. The state cookie of New Mexico is a rather unique treat which is flavored with cinnamon and anise - the bizcochito. As for Utah, it may not have an official dessert but its state snack food is Jell-O. Missouri as well has an official state dessert and that is the ice cream cone which was popularized after the St. Louis World Fair back in 1904.

If you think that because California has no official food or dessert the citizens of the Golden State no longer love delicious treats - you are so wrong. Los Angeles is home the famed Culver City ice cream shop, YoKuMon with all its ice cream treats and other sweets. Aside from delectable ice cream, sundaes, shave ice and shakes, YoKuMon also takes pride in its famous $2 gourmet ice cream sandwich.

These ice cream sandwiches are not the typical treats one finds in their grocer's freezer. YoKuMon's ice cream sandwiches are created by sandwiching a huge scoop of ice cream between two freshly baked cookies. The staff at this Culver City dessert spot bakes eight different varieties of cookies throughout the day and you can mix or match any flavor of cookie with any flavor of ice cream that you prefer.
