Those Who Get EMT Training Charlottesville Va Can Save Lives In A Crisis

By Jaclyn Hurley

We live in a complicated, fast paced world where we are on the move a lot of the time. Whether commuting by car, bus or train, we spend a lot of time getting places, and while doing so we are usually surrounded by people we do not know. So when there are instances of physical duress, either due to disease or injury, our survival may depend on those strangers who have learned EMT training Charlottesville Va.

The notion that we might be witness to a vehicle or other mishap including injuries is both real and increasingly likely. Despite the cynics, most of the population, when faced with such an incident, want to be helpful. The only problem is that few of us take the time to learn the basic skills that could make a life or death difference in an emergency.

Unfortunately, no matter how much one might wish to help, treating someone who has experienced serious trauma or other health emergency is not an intuitively obvious endeavor. Our natural instincts can actually cause tremendous injury or even death. Even the simple act of moving a victim might be exactly the wrong thing to do.

This is the real reason that individuals suffer when the aid of someone on scene could have saved their life. The result of so many public events in which someone trying to help has been sued for their efforts can dampen the enthusiasm of the most well meaning citizen. Without proper education, it is more likely that people will stand by and watch without acting.

Many private and governmental organizations have made it a goal to develop protective measures for those who try to save lives. Publicly funded training courses are designed to ensure people who have the desire to be helpful in a crisis have the real information they need to do so in the safest way. With caution and understanding, almost any citizen can be a life saver.

On the legislative side of the situation, concerned lawmakers want to provide a risk free environment for those willing to help a stranger in need. This has to be balanced, however, with the responsibility to protect citizens from additional injury even from those who desire to help their fellow citizen. This has resulted in the creation of the so called Good Samaritan laws.

Unfortunately, these laws are unique to each state. Some offer protection only for trained individuals, while others are designed for everyone honestly trying to provide aid. All states except for Vermont see providing aid at the scene of an accident or in case of other injury or illness as a voluntary act, but Vermont requires its citizens to provide such assistance.

In the end, it is best to do the research for the state one lives in to be best aware of the laws. For society, however, learning basic emergency medical training is a good thing that helps everyone be ready to aid one another. One never knows when they might need the skills, and it may just be that the knowledge could save a friend, relative or other loved one.
