Praise For Bonaparte Breads Baltimore Maryland

By Coleen Torres

Baltimore, Maryland's capital, is an historic city with an enchanting area called Fells Point. Founded in 1763, this inner port town became part of the larger metropolitan area ten years later, has the city's oldest existing residence, and is believed to be the site of the first pre-Revolutionary War coffee house. Bonaparte Breads Baltimore is on the Ann Street Pier with extensive outdoor seating as well as a great view of the water from the spacious interior.

The cafe is perfectly situated on the waterfront in Fells Point, the charming historic district of the port city. Brick ovens help give the bread an authentic French taste and texture, and 'savoir faire' inspires the croissants, tarts, quiches, and sandwiches. The cafe is open seven days a week from 8 to 6, and there is usually parking to be found during the day. Bakers use organic flour for the baguettes, whole and multi grain loaves, pain de campaigne (country), and fruit breads.

Owner and Frenchman Pierre LeFilliatre came from Paris to Savage Point, Maryland to open his first location in 1996. He quickly became known for delicious breads and superb pastries. When it was time to expand, he was fortunate to find a charming old building and an unbeatable setting on the harbor in Fells Point. The inside is decorated in the French style.

Locally sourced ingredients are made fresh daily into quiches, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. Sandwiches are served hot or cold, and the lunch special includes beverage, whole sandwich, small salad, and pastry of choice - enough even if you're really hungry. You really must try a tasty sandwich made on the panini grill. For those who want a lighter meal, chicken and tuna salad are made on-site.

Robust coffee or flavorful tea is served in large cups, with one free refill. Pastries are delicious; the almond croissants and fruit tarts seem to be general favorites, judging from reviews. Four and five stars are freely given to this waterfront niche.

The cafe is a great place to eat, but they also offer take out. In fact, you can talk to the staff and they will customize a meal for you, taking into account dietary restrictions and personal taste. They also do wedding cakes and desserts for other celebrations. The same great products that make the cafes so popular are sold at farmers' markets, specialty stores, and fine restaurants in DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis.

There are many customer reviews on this important part of the major historic district of the city. Four and five stars are given over and over by patrons. The owner wants everyone to know that freshness and authenticity are his main objectives, as well as good service, good food, great coffee, and a pleasant ambiance.

It's a winning combination: the city's most appealing area, waterfront views, and authentic French fare. Plan a day at Fells Point and make sure not to miss Bonaparte Breads.
