Could Shroom Burgers Save You Money?

By Frances Thomas

There is always something new coming out of the food industry and it can be difficult to keep up to speed with the latest trends. One that caught our eye recently is shroom burgers. Despite the illicit connotations, these have no hallucinatory effects and are simply a mushroom in the form of a burger. Whether it forms the bun or as a substitute for the meat inside, they are becoming increasingly popular.

Meat is usually the most expensive item on the shelves and this can be very offputting. If your family are willing to try other recipes that don't have meat, or at least don't have as much meat, you will be able to save a surprising amount of money. Alternatively, sometimes buying meat from a local butchers can offer a far higher quality for less money.

Vegetables are not always the cheapest option available to us, especially if you opt for organic, but if you are a savvy shopper they don't need to break the bank. Find recipes that use lentils and beans to save money and reduce the amount of vegetables you use. This will also reduce any unnecessary waste. Try to avoid all the really cheap but unhealthy processed foods available to you.

Waste plays a big part in your budget, as any food that you have to throw away is money wasted. If your recipe has a lot of fruit and vegetables in it, but you aren't planning on cooking it until later on in the week, it is often better to buy the other ingredients during your weekly shop, and waiting to buy the veg until you need it. This reduces any chance of waste from rot.

Planning out the meals for the week and doing a big shop is a good way to save money and budget each week. You will quickly get to grips with how much money you need each month for food and find ways to cut back wherever you can, without feeling like you are restricted. Avoiding daily shopping will save a great deal of money each week.

Finding recipe ideas that are delicious but also low cost is the best way to save money on shopping. Vegetarian recipes are the cheapest, as long as they don't have too many unusual ingredients. Mushroom or vegetable burgers, for example, can be delicious and require relatively few ingredients. When combined with a batter and cheese filling, you will quickly forget all about the meat you are missing.

Batch cooking is an easy technique to help your budget. Cook more than you need for one meal and freeze the rest for another day when you need it. This can be used whether you live alone or have a large family. Simply freeze it in individual servings or in a large pan, depending on when and how you need it. It also allows you to have easy access to a variety of meals so you don't get bored with eating the same thing all the time.

It is possible to eat meat on a budget if you plan ahead and are careful with any food that might potentially be wasted. Eating smaller amounts of meat and adding more vegetables is a good way to cut costs without cutting out meat. Some people do not feel like they have had a proper meal unless there is some form of meat on their plate. So this is a good option for them.
