Coffee: Four Facts You Might Not Know About

By Debrah Elliot

With records showing that about 400 billion cups of coffee are being consumed on an annual basis worldwide, who is to say that it is not the most popular drink? Ever since that first coffee house opened in Constantinople, now Istanbul, in the year 1475 and up to this very day when coffee shops are visible on most streets all over the planet, coffee has been highly preferred by many people. If you are one of the millions who love coffee, read on and learn a little bit more about this drink.

Historically, the story about its discovery was caused by some Ethiopian farmers' curiosity. Having found goats eating some berries and noticing that they seem to be with more energy than the usual, the farmers then tried the berries themselves. This gave birth to "coffee-eating" throughout Africa. Tribesmen mixed the berries with fat and consumed the mixture as they did with their regular food in the hope of having a much higher energy level.

While we all know that caffeine can be a source of energy whenever we ingest it, this caffeine is actually highly beneficial to the coffee plant. The pollination process is aided because caffeine attracts bees, which, of course, help many different types plants pollinate. While the bees seemed to enjoy that caffeine kick, many common plant predators do not and caffeine is actually toxic to animals such as slugs and thus caffeine helps ward off potential enemies of the precious plant.

Those who find it relevant for them to watch what they are ingesting especially if it has something to do with calories, coffee can be good for you as it comes with an almost zero amount of it, only a small hint of fat. Any cup of regular filtered brewed coffee has only half a percent of fat. Espressos though contain 2.5% of fat, but it's still a rather small amount.

Do you know that Theodore Roosevelt was known to consume a gallon of coffee daily? And French writer Voltaire is such a heavy drinker of coffee too that he drank 50 cups every single day. This of course is not something that is being recommended that you do because doing so may be dangerous to the point of it even being psychoactive. Note that caffeine in really high amounts when consumed is truly fatal. Just so you know, to consume a hundred cups of caffeine would mean death so it is not being encouraged. On a more positive note though, coffee consumed at a safe level comes with antioxidants which could give you health benefits.

  1. Coffee is similar; with coffee, the dual nature is bitterness vs. sweet. Coffee is either drunk with a lot of cream and sugar or it’s black and bitter. The thing is, it’s the bitterness of the coffee that makes it so delicious when you add fat and sugar
