Using Hydrating Water To Restore Healthy Electrolyte Levels

By Cornelia White

Drinking the right quantities of pure water is an important way to stay healthy, but in certain circumstances, the body needs a little extra. During hot weather and heavy exercise, it is easy to over-hydrate when drinking too many fluids and insufficient electrolytes. When the body's sodium levels are set off balance by over-hydration, illness, coma and death are all possibilities. Hydrating water adds both fluids and salts to the body.

The body's balance of sodium, potassium, calcium, and glucose is core to healthy functioning of the organs. When any of these electrolytes become unbalanced, the organs and brain may absorb too much H20. This is known as water intoxication because it causes cognitive malfunctioning. This is more likely among people who have anti-diuretic hormone imbalances, which result in extreme thirst while the kidneys fail to excrete the fluids that are taken in.

Those who develop low sodium levels tend not to have dietary insufficiency. Instead, this tends to happen because too much liquid has been taken in, which can happen when there is a hormonal imbalance. Those with heavy exercise programs are particularly prone to this problem, and should add sodium and other salts to their drinking fluids to prevent it.

The body has an extremely delicate balance of electrolytes, which affects health at a cellular level. The most important of these are potassium, sodium, chloride, calcium, sulfate, and magnesium. Hydration preparations that contain these and additional salts are the best way to correct imbalances while increasing fluid intake. Excessive thirst during exercise is best met with liquid that contains the correct salt levels, since pure water dilutes the body's salts to cause negative side effects that are potentially dangerous.

Excess perspiration during exercise can cause salt imbalances. When this happens, the most likely issues are low sodium and potassium levels. Those with challenging but short training programs are prone to this problem, while those taking on long distance marathons are more prone to drinking too many fluids. This leads to diminished levels of all salts.

In times of illness when nausea and diarrhea cause dehydration, it is important to substitute both fluid and salts. Some hydration formulas have high levels of sugar, particularly those marketed as sports drinks. These are not recommended for treatment during sickness. Sugar-free formulas do the same thing without increasing sugar levels.

Every electrolyte the body needs serves a different function. In today's health-conscious world, many are eliminating sodium from their diets but it has an important function. When levels become too low, hyponatremia results, which can lead to coma and death. Sodium also helps the body to balance its fluid levels while preventing muscle cramps.

Potassium is a salt that works inside the cardiac cells to keep the heart rate regular. It also keeps the muscles healthy and maintains a healthy fluid balance. When levels are too low, it can result in neurological symptoms such as neuropathy.

When perspiration increases due to heat waves, hydrating water combats several resultant symptoms. It helps to increase blood pressure when it is too low while at the same time restoring a balance of electrolytes. The delicate salt balance needed is best achieved with fluids that are medically formulated, rather than with pure fluids.
