Information About Culver City

By Debrah Elliot

If you live in Culver City, you probably enjoy the great weather and close access to all the attractions of the Los Angeles area, but you might not know too many details about this city. Here are a few facts that might surprise you.

For many thousands of years, the Tongva people lived in the area now known as Culver City. Once the Spanish settled in the region, Culver City was part of several different Spanish ranchos. During the Civil War, Camp Latham was here and used as a training facility for Union soldiers.

In 1917, Harry Culver, a promoter and a real estate developer, incorporated the city, and made it a significant region for the flourishing movie industry. Later on, Metro Goldwyn Mayer and many other film making companies built their studios in this city. As a matter of fact, top-notch and renowned movies like "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With the Wind" were partially filmed on Culver City's studio lots. As for now, the city features a great number of film making companies like Sony Pictures Studio, the city's largest employer with over 5,000 employees.

Culver City is home to more than one dozen parks, including a skate park and a dog park aptly named "The Boneyard." Several parks include recreation centers and most have large playgrounds for children, as well as soccer fields, basketball courts and softball diamonds. Carlson Park is home to the Culver City Public Theater, which provides a variety of open-air productions during the summer months all free of charge.

The downtown area features a variety of interesting historic sites. For example, the Culver Hotel which was built in 1924 hosted much of the cast of The Wizard of Oz during the filming of that famous movie. The Helms Bakery Building is another historic gem. It was home to a popular industrial baking company from the 1930s until 1969 and now houses unique furniture and housewares stores as well as several restaurants and bars.

To get a delightful cup of coffee in Culver City, just walk around the corner from West L.A. College. Island Monarch Coffee offers an amazing, fresh and delightful cup of coffee. Unlike other coffee shops, their beans are all imported from South America and Hawaii and they aren't roasted until after they arrive. The freshly roasted beans at this Culver City coffeehouse won't be ground until you order your coffee. Moreover, the water used for their served coffee is clean and pure, as it goes through reverse osmosis.
