The Many Types Of African Pastries

When it comes to the selection of African pastries available, the options vary greatly from one end of the continent the next. With such a large amount of distance and the many cultures that inhabit the land it is not surprise that the variety of options is so vast. From sweet to savory, and anything in between, the options are sure to please even the most basic tastes.

A very common option in East Africa is a fried dough known as mandazi. This deep fried piece of sweet dough is commonly served with a variety of different options for dipping. This can be anything from jam and honey, to something less sweet such as butter or peanut butter.

Samosas are also a very common choice in many different countries throughout the continent. These are usually savory and are filled with different assortments of meat and vegetables. They are often seasoned with the spices that are common to the region where they are being made so the flavors will vary from one place to the next.

Or South African pastries there are many options, but one of the most common ones is known as Koeksisters. This is a sweet dough that is deep fried to give is a crispy outside with a soft inside. It is then covered in a sweet syrup and served while it is still hot and gooey. They are very common in the area and are to perfect treat for anyone who loves sweet dishes.

When it comes to North Africa the flavors tend to lean more towards the savory side. There are many different forms of pastry there that are generally made from a form of filo pastry that has been filled with various types of meat and vegetable fillings. These are cooked in oil and served while they are still hot.

In west Africa, meat pies are a very common type of pastry that can be found in many shops thought the cities. They are generally filled with a variety of spiced meats ranging from chicken and beef to more exotic flavors such a goat and lamb. There are different types meat pies in all the different regions and each one has their own unique blend to the spices.

Since the region itself is so vast and diverse, you can not expect to find the same options from one end to the next. The many different religions and cultures have created their own varieties of pastry treats that are made up from their local foods. Whether you want something that is sweet or savory, you will be sure to find what you are looking for in one of these options.

A great part of traveling to many different countries is getting the chance to try the wonderful treats that each one has to offer. For African pastries you have so many different treats to choose from. Even if you are unable to travel to the wonderful countries that they come from you will still be able to try them from the comfort of your home.
