Consumers may be interested in learning the US government has rated the 2014 Chevy Cruze at 46 mpg. This is currently the highest rating offered for any vehicle other than hybrids. Buyers should note that the ratings for city and mixed driving are less spectacular at 27 mpg and 33 mpg respectively, but still better than many vehicles currently on the road. Most drivers are pleased with the ability to stretch the vehicle mileage.
In the 2014 model year, the primary competitor will be the VW Jetta TDA, with a rating of 42 mpg highway and a slightly higher 30 mpg and 34 mpg rating for city and mixed driving. Both models receive these higher marks using diesel and not gasoline. Mazda is expected to join in the ranks of manufacturers supplying diesel vehicles over the summer with their Mazda 6, but has not yet supplied any details on the vehicle.
When the vehicle was first unveiled at the Chicago auto show in February 2013, Chevrolet had estimated that the vehicle would provide 42 mpg on the highway. However, the manufacturer claimed at that time they were being conservative, and that further tweaks by the engineers have help to improve the mileage of the vehicle. These changes have resulted in the higher government rating.
In order to obtain this type of mileage, the vehicle is equipped with a six speed automatic transmission. The VW is available with either automatic or manual transmissions. It is also $1000 to $2000 less in price than the Chevrolet.
According to Chevy, the biggest reason for the price difference in the vehicles is the number of standard features the Cruze offers. It has bigger wheels, a longer power train warranty and leather seats. However, this must be weighed against VW's many years experience in providing small diesel vehicles. They began producing diesel Rabbits in the late 70s. Chevy answers that they have sold diesel Cruzes in other locations around the world since 2010.
The Chevy engine has slightly higher horsepower and offers more torque. While the Jetta offers a 140 hp engine, the Cruze has 148 hp. The Cruze offers 258 pound feet of torque as compared with the Jetta's 230.
Some consumers may remember that this is not the highest government mpg rating ever issued in the Chevrolet name. In 1985 they released the Sprint, a three cylinder gasoline engine vehicle manufactured by Suzuki. The 1988 model offered the highest mpg ratings at 53 highway. This model still had a carbureted engine. In fact, in 1989, when the fuel injected engine was installed, the cylinder heads required a redesign that lowered the gasoline mileage. Chevy only held on to the Sprint a few years before spinning off the Geo line.
Today, when consumers go to buy a new automobile, one of their first questions is usually about gas mileage. A car that does not get excellent mileage may take more from the transportation budget in fuel costs than it does in insurance and vehicle payment. The Chevy Cruze's 46 mpg rating on the open road makes it a good choice for consumers. It allows an improvement in gas mileage without making the jump to a hybrid vehicle.
